Old News at the Ann Arbor District Library

In a 10/21 blog titled "Welcome to Old News" the Ann Arbor District Library announced plans to offer digital copies of material from old Ann Arbor newspapers. Of special interest to genealogists are the scanned copies of these early newspapers:

A word of warning -- it appears that there is a search box at the top of the screen that can be used to search these newspapers, but that is deceptive. It searches only a collection of articles from later issues of the Ann Arbor News .

You can only search the newspapers of the 1880's, one issue at a time. Here's how:

Download the .pdf file of that issue. (These are large files and the download may be slow. )
On the bottom of the image, on the little black bar with symbols, click the adobe reader logo, far right. This will bring up the Adobe Reader toolbar.
From that, you can search the issue for a word or phrase.

In the version of Adobe that I use, this appears as a pair of binoculars. left side of the image.
Warning: the search feature is not perfect. It can miss words. `

Bethlehem Cemetery Reading June 19, and June 26, 2011

We will be reading Bethlehem Cemetery on the following dates: Sunday, June 19th (Father's Day) and also meet Sunday, June 26th from 1:30-5:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Cemetery on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor. We'll add other dates in July as needed (except not July 3rd). We hope to see you in the next two weeks.

LDS Library

The LDS joint library with the GSWC, which is at 525 E. Woodland Drive, Saline, MI, is open Monday, Thursday and Saturday from 10-2, and Tuesday 6-9. The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints is between Maple Road and Ann Arbor Saline Road, on the North side of Woodland. The library entrance is around at the rear. As always the phone number there is 734-944-4789.
The Research Committee of the GSWC meets there on Mondays. Come and ask questions!
